![]() Save states are primarily also to save time in minimize time between each time you try a jump or grappling hook.Ĭonclusion: Happy to have completed one of the gaming hall of fames, but it is not the best metroidvania I have played when you disregard the time of release difference. I found the game really hard and I had the benefit of save states, but perhaps it is down to git gud. I also wonder how someone could complete the game back in the pre-internet days. In Ori I always felt in control while in Metroid felt a lot less responsive. Overall I can really appreciate the design and creativity considering the game is from 1994, but compared to the modern metroidvania I played in Ori 2 I just found the controls very frustrating. ![]() Really like that it is a short and tight experience.I personally don’t like non-intrusive storytelling style – I typically find myself having missed so much when you read about the story online afterwards.Excellent graphics and music considering the age of the game.Found the jumping quite finnicky which made me fail the escape sequence at the end the first time I tried it.For reference i had 1.5 rows of energy tanks, 25 super missles, 80ish regular missles and all beam upgrades during the fight.I really cant imagine doing ridley without save states and having to do the two ninja guards each time you die.In general found the game quite difficult, probably died 20-30 times with half of them attributed to ridley.Quicksand and grapple hook were probably my biggest frustrations.Looked up a guide to help me understand the grapple wall jumping technique and spoiled myself on the grappling technique with Draygon boss, I could imagine this fight would be quite difficult otherwise.Grapple hook was extremely awkward to use and caused a lot of frustration, in particular the wall jump section in the water world to get to the boss. The water world was also very challenging, had to use a guide to find my way to the serpent boss. The power bomb tube was spoiled a long time ago so didn’t struggle with that part.In terms of guides I had to use it for finding the entrance to Kraid with the wall you need to destroy with power missiles (quite sure this is where i got lost previously). You could probably double the time if I didn’t use save states and peeked at guides for hints. In game clock time was 6.09 with item completion rate at 59%.This time around I allowed myself to look up help online to avoid too much frustration and avoid wasting time I have previously tried the game many years ago, but bounced from it multiple times as I got lost at the start. Inspired by the recent “Hollow knight is the best metroidvania” thread and input that the game is not too long, I finished Super Metroid just now for the first time.
